Melissa Boyd, government relations manager for Southern California Edison, presented an Edison Scholars award to local student Leo Castro and described the program's two-decade history of supporting STEM students. "This will be our 20th year having our Edison Scholars Program, where we recognize only 30 students in our service area territory that have received $50,000," Boyd said, noting the award supports recipients' college plans.
Leo Castro thanked the council and Edison for the scholarship and said he plans to attend Harvey Mudd to study engineering. The council and attendees posed for a photograph after the presentation; the moment was framed as a community recognition of academic achievement and corporate support for local students.
