Department on Aging highlights services and warns federal funding uncertainty

Lona Kelly, Director of the Harvey County Department on Aging, presented the department’s proposed 2026 budgets for the Department on Aging fund and the Transportation fund. Kelly reviewed 2024 accomplishments, including nutrition services, RSVP volunteer engagement and Interurban Transportation metrics, and said it is uncertain whether federal funding that supports some services "will be reduced or eliminated." The draft 2026 request includes a supplemental for increased vehicle maintenance costs and continuing core programs.
Kelly highlighted service levels: OAA-funded congregate and home-delivered meals in 2024 cost $416,601 and the department supports multiple evidence-based prevention programs and caregiver supports. Transportation provided 7,470 trips in KDOT FY24 and the department expects to monitor KDOT regionalization work and mobility-manager developments. Commissioners agreed to place the Extension appropriation and related items on the next agenda for decision within statutory timelines.
