Board approves Metro Transit lease for small restroom facility at 3001 Ewing Ave S

The Hennepin County Board on Aug. 20 approved a lease with the Metropolitan Council for a small area of county-owned land near West Lake Street and Ewing Avenue in Minneapolis to permit Metro Transit to install a fixed restroom facility intended for bus operator layovers and rider needs.
"Metro Transit's requested the lease of a small area of vacant land to allow the construction of a fixed facility of approximately 120 square feet," Facility Services' Spencer Agnew told the board, explaining the site was acquired decades ago for an unbuilt highway project and that a temporary portable restroom placed on the site last year is not a viable long-term solution due to operating, accessibility and security issues. Agnew said the proposed placement is intended not to preclude future redevelopment and the lease would include termination language if redevelopment proceeds.
Commissioner Marion Green thanked staff for the explanation and the board approved the lease by voice vote. Staff said the site has been used as a Metro Transit bus turnaround and layover since about 1990 and the new arrangement is intended as a more durable solution for operators and riders while preserving redevelopment options.
