The Union City Borough Council voted unanimously Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part‑time police officer.
Councilor Matt Joyce made the motion and Councilor Osborn seconded. Councilors said a part‑time hire would cost less than a full‑time officer and provide additional coverage; Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits and that final cost would depend on hours worked. The motion carried unanimously with six councilors present and one absent.
Mayor Robert Wolf had told the council he believes maintaining a police department is vital to the borough and recommended hiring part‑time help. Chief David Pernice told council the department handled 269 calls between June 1 and Aug. 13 — an average of about 3.63 calls per day — and noted staffing needs can be driven by calls that occupy entire shifts.
Council took no separate action on hours or scheduling at the meeting; implementation details such as start date and hours were not specified.
