Piedmont’s City Council gave unanimous first reading to an ordinance that updates city code to mirror a new state law (AB 413) prohibiting parking within 20 feet of the approach side of a crosswalk (with a 15‑foot exception near curb extensions). Public Works Director Daniel Gonzalez and City Engineer John Wenger told the council staff identified 17 designated parking spaces, primarily in the civic‑center area and near mid‑block crosswalks, that will be removed to maximize sight distance and pedestrian safety.
Staff said the change targets high‑pedestrian corridors identified in Piedmont’s Safer Streets report and that the net citywide parking loss is minimal (about 1.2% overall within the analyzed corridors). Enforcement will rely on education, focused enforcement in high‑pedestrian areas and existing parking‑enforcement practices; the police chief said the city’s public safety camera network will be used for public‑right‑of‑way footage but is not a substitute for applicant or private site cameras. Staff plans communications outreach and to coordinate restriping/curb repainting in early 2025 to implement the changes.
