Union City seeks up to $100,000 in CDBG funds to repair Municipal Lot #1 sinkholes

Union City Borough Council voted Sept. 16 to apply for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to help repair sinkholes and stormwater infrastructure in Municipal Lot #1. The motion, made by Councilor Steadman and seconded by Councilor Osborn, authorized submitting an application for up to $100,000 to the county; the motion carried unanimously.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported the borough will have Mansfield fill the sinkhole, replace roughly 10 feet of pipe and install a new catch basin before performing smoke-and-dye testing. Borough staff are obtaining paving quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to repave the affected area and the catch-basin site, and business owners and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified before testing is scheduled. The council directed staff to pursue the repairs and the grant application to help fund the work.
