Chair's remarks described efforts by county staff and nonprofit partners to help residents and said the loss highlights gaps in protections for vulnerable tenants; the chair asked for a legislator to move a resolution to allocate $50,000 for legal consultation and tenant advocacy. "Access to legal support at critical moments can make the difference between stability and displacement," the chair said when introducing the proposal. Public commenters and county staff framed the need as urgent as residents may be returning to the building and some face eviction notices.
Travis Brooks moved Resolution N (ID 13982) to shift $50,000 from the contingent fund to county administration program expense to support legal assistance; the motion was seconded and carried in a roll-call vote (12 ayes). County Attorney Mori Josephson said the county is coordinating with state agencies and with LawNY; he noted LawNY already has active cases and is increasing capacity but that the funds are intended to buy otherwise unavailable legal access for residents while longer-term responses and enforcement continue.
The resolution directs County Finance to make the accounting entries and requires a report to the Legislature within 90 days on implementation, utilization, and any recommendations for continuation. The funding is intended for consultation and tenant advocacy rather than to fund direct county-led litigation.
