Escondido High School senior Angelina Tran was recognized as the district’s Inspirational Student of the Month, Principal Jason Jacobs told the board on April 8. Jacobs highlighted her “perfect score on the math section of the PSAT” and a summer research internship with NASA at the UT Austin Center for Space Research.
Angelina, who spoke to the board about growing up in a Vietnamese immigrant family, said the opportunity and mentorship she received in high school led to multiple college acceptances. "I was accepted into Johns Hopkins University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD," she said, and added, "I will be attending Johns Hopkins University to major in astrophysics and minor in space science and engineering with a $55,000 renewables scholarship." Teachers who worked with her described her as driven, bilingual, and active in extracurriculars including Key Club and the Aerospace Academy.
The board also accepted certificates from the county and the district recognizing the student; Mayor White congratulated Tran for her achievements. The recognition drew attention to the district’s academic and extracurricular pathways that supported her research opportunities and presentations to scientific conferences.
