District reports strong CAASPP rankings but flags subgroup declines and attendance link
Summary
Piedmont reported top-tier CAASPP results in 2024 but staff flagged declines for some groups—particularly students with Black/African American identity—and identified chronic absenteeism and early-grades disruption as possible factors. The district outlined MTSS and other targeted interventions.

District staff presented a detailed review of the 2024 CAASPP results and identified areas of concern alongside strong overall performance. Stephanie Griffin, director of instructional technology, told the board that Piedmont ranked among the top districts in California across ELA and math, with notable increases in science, and reported 82 students with a perfect score on one or more exams.
"Our students also scored very high, 4th in the state on science," Griffin said, and added that 33 third-through-eighth-and-11th-graders achieved perfect scores in ELA, 45 in math, and 11 in science. She also said some student groups—specifically students with Black or African American identity—showed declines and are the focus of targeted follow-up.
Board members pressed staff on whether chronic absenteeism correlated with lower CAASPP performance. Griffin and other administrators said they are assembling lists of students tracked for chronic absenteeism and will work with MTSS teams and site leaders to run root-cause analyses, examine longitudinal data and craft individualized plans and system-level interventions (e.g., revised screening, ELA curriculum adoption, NWEA screeners for grades 6–12).
Why it matters: The results signal both district strengths and equity challenges. Board members asked for a clear, timebound follow-up plan to diagnose subgroup declines and to identify evidence-based interventions the district will prioritize.
Staff committed to meet with site leaders and MTSS teams and to return to the board with a more detailed action plan for addressing attendance, screening and subgroup disparities.
