The Vernon County Finance Committee said Oct. 10 that the proposed 2026 budget deficit has been reduced to $118,000 after a second round of meetings with department heads.
“These discussions have brought the deficit to $118,000.00,” Admin. Coordinator Cassie Hanan reported to the committee, according to the minutes. Hanan told supervisors the options under consideration included using some non-lapse funds, cutting discretionary spending and reducing positions.
Committee members reviewed reasons for recent expense increases and examined salary and benefits data for departments with the largest projected cost growth. The committee asked staff to present specific savings scenarios and the potential impacts on services before finalizing budget amendments.
The committee took several subsequent actions to close the shortfall, including targeted cuts and use of excess sales tax revenue, and will review the updated budget at its next meeting.
