Story County canvass certifies Maxwell special election; winner will serve through 2027

The Story County Board of Supervisors, meeting March 10, 2026 as the Board of Canvassers, voted to certify the results of the March 3 special election in the City of Maxwell. Linda Murken presided as chair; Supervisors Latifah Faisal and Lisa Heddens joined the action. The board approved Resolution #26-65 by roll call vote.
Lucy Martin, Story County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, told the board that the special election was held after a citizen petition and that the successful candidate will serve through 2027, with the seat scheduled for the regular November 2027 ballot. "Turnout for the 3/3/26 Special Election exceeded turnout from the regular city election held last November," Martin said.
Faisal moved and Heddens seconded the motion to adopt Resolution #26-65, "Certification (Canvass) of Election Results of 3/3/26 for the Special Election, City of Maxwell." The board then voted to declare the canvass complete and certify the results to the appropriate jurisdiction; both motions passed on roll call with unanimous support. The meeting adjourned at 9:02 a.m.
The certification is effective upon signature and, as the board noted, can be inspected Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at Story County Administration offices, 900 6th Street in Nevada.
