Advisory council backs letters pressing county and state on illegal cannabis enforcement

Dane Downing moved and the council approved a letter of support for correspondence from Joann Williamson and Rio Cardone asking county and state officials, and the county’s head of code enforcement, to address illegal cannabis operations. The motion passed without objection.
During discussion Sheriff Kendall said state and federal agencies have limited appetite to control illegal cannabis and that tribal-sovereignty issues complicate enforcement. He said the office prioritizes trespass, violence, cartel activity and large illegal grows and noted staffing limits. Lourance Hall said a complaint-driven enforcement model unfairly penalizes legal farmers.
Downing later moved to approve a separate Draft Letter B to listed state and county agencies and NGOs, with an explicit omission of any federal agency (including ICE); that motion also passed without objection. The council discussed inviting Gretchen McLaughlin, the head of code enforcement, to meet with RVAMAC to discuss possible resolutions and enforcement ideas.
