Sheriff reports surge in calls, says office understaffed as deputies return from training

Sheriff Kendall told the Round Valley Area Municipal Advisory Council on Feb. 5 that Round Valley saw 356 calls last month compared with 178 in Laytonville, including domestic-violence and suspicious-activity responses. He said there were 25 arrests and that rain has slowed progress on the county jail.
“The MCSO is down 17 deputies now,” Sheriff Kendall said, adding that one deputy has finished training and eight more are expected to arrive soon. He praised Mendocino Department of Transportation for responding to recent storm-related road conditions.
The sheriff framed enforcement priorities around trespass, violence, cartel activity and large illegal grows. The council did not take action on staffing or resource requests at the meeting; the report served as an informational update to the advisory council and attending residents.
