Orange Glen principal and student praise Middle College program as pathway to college credits

Orange Glen High School's Middle College program received a detailed presentation at the Dec. 17 Escondido Union High School District board meeting, where Principal Michael Santos described dual-enrollment outcomes and a student shared how the program affected her life.
Santos told trustees that Middle College students take at least one college course per semester at Palomar College and that "81.1% of our Middle College students pass their college course with a C or better," citing comparative success versus other districts. He said several students are on track to earn associate degrees and that the district funds books and coursework through LCAP for Middle College participants.
Juliana Garcia, the board's inspirational student of the month, spoke about her experience in the program. "Middle College has acted as a sort of rehabilitation for me... In the end, Bridal College has been so much more than a program to me. It's been a 2nd chance, a family, and a home," Garcia said, describing the program's academic and social supports.
Santos and staff also outlined supports for students with housing insecurity and partnerships (McKinney-Vento services, Transitional Youth Program, Escondido Education Compact) intended to connect vulnerable students with resources while maintaining academic progress.
