Legislature approves transportation planner hires, vehicle telematics and Cornell access for remediation

The Tompkins County Legislature approved a series of Facilities & Infrastructure items on June 2, including creation of two Ithaca Tompkins County Transportation Council (ITCTC) planner positions, a contingent-fund appropriation for county vehicle telematics, and a license-to-enter for Cornell University to continue remediation and monitoring of chemical disposal and radiation burial sites adjacent to Ithaca Tompkins International Airport.
Committee Chair Lee Shirtliff said the planner positions (Planner 1 and Planner 2) are funded in the budget and were cross-posted to broaden recruitment; the measure passed unanimously. Regarding telematics, Shirtliff described the system as a tool to "right-size our fleet" by collecting vehicle use and maintenance data; members asked for a future report on how the data will be used in budgeting. The contingent appropriation was approved unanimously.
Members also approved a license that allows Cornell University access through airport property to continue required monitoring and remediation of waste sites managed under DEC stipulations; the license is typically renewed on a five-year basis. An airport update noted a 4.9% increase in enplanements in the first quarter of the year.
Each item was approved by voice vote with unanimous support among members present. The resolutions were recorded in the meeting packet with IDs including 14048 (ITCTC planners), 14063 (telematics), and 14092 (Cornell license).
