Tompkins County reports February sales-tax distribution down 6.58% year-over-year

Daryl Tuttle, Tompkins County Director of Finance, presented the February sales-tax report to the legislature. Total sales-tax distributed for the county in February was $5,692,955, a 6.58% decrease from February of the prior year. Year-to-date (January-February) distributions totaled $12,718,051, a decrease of 0.89% compared with the same period last year.
Tuttle noted that the county share of February distributions was $3,000,202 and that municipality distributions outside the city showed steeper declines in some areas. He advised caution in interpretation and recommended waiting until the end of the third quarter to draw firmer conclusions about trends. Legislators asked staff to include quarterly industry breakout data (NYSED distribution categories) in the next report to better understand which sectors are driving the changes.
