"You know how many people get cancer every year... and the average cost of treating those people is... about $125,000," Sigler said during debate, arguing policymakers could estimate and fund cancer care specifically.
Supporters said the measure offers a narrower, politically feasible alternative to sweeping single-payer proposals. Opponents emphasized process concerns but the resolution passed in the legislature's floor vote.
The resolution is advisory: it asks state lawmakers to craft budget language covering cancer-treatment costs in 2027. The county clerk's office will transmit the resolution to state representatives.
