County attorney: Asteri sanctions mostly upheld; enforcement and oversight to continue

County Attorney Maury Josephson updated the legislature on enforcement actions related to Asteri, a county-impacted housing property. He said a hearing officer upheld $40,000 of the $49,000 in fines sought for sanitary violations and conditioned consideration of the remaining $9,000 on the building management committing equivalent remediation efforts.
Josephson said the hearing officer was a former legislator and that the enforcement report and recommendation will go before the Board of Health at a special meeting to decide whether to accept the reduced fine and the proposed remediation plan. County staff described ongoing coordination with OTDA, DSS and service providers to address resident needs and noted daily interactions with state agencies as part of ongoing relief and oversight activity. Legislators discussed enforcement escalation, possible inspection cadence and how penalty revenue is recorded in the general fund.
