The Tompkins County Legislature on March 3 honored Volunteers of America with a proclamation recognizing the nonprofit’s 130 years of service and its local role as the county’s shelter provider on Cherry Street. The chair cited VOA’s work in housing, education and health programs and said the organization serves more than 10,000 people a year across Upstate New York.
Lisa Barrett, who accepted the proclamation, thanked the body and described moving from court coordination work into the nonprofit sector as rewarding. She said VOA looks forward to continuing the partnership with county staff on shelter operations and related programs. The chair also used the proclamation to note recent code‑blue partnerships and the county’s efforts to maintain shelter capacity during winter months.
