The Hill City School Board voted unanimously among members present on April 13, 2026, to hire Zachary Erickson as the district’s Early Childhood–8 principal, with a start date of July 1, 2026. The motion to hire was made by Joell Miranda and seconded by Ron Saxton; the board recorded a 5–0 vote with Jeremy Nelson absent.
The board also approved a three-year employment contract for the EC–8 principal covering the 2026–2029 school years. The contract sets the principal’s salary at $115,000 for 2026–27, $118,450 for 2027–28 and $122,003.50 for 2028–29, and specifies a 260-day duty year and 20 paid vacation days per contract year. The contract includes district-paid single or family health coverage, an annual Health Savings Account contribution of $2,000 (single) or $4,000 (family) for employees enrolled in the district plan, and a district match to a tax-sheltered annuity of up to $2,500 per year.
The contract text presented with the meeting packet also details sick-leave accrual (12 days per year for a 260-day principal, with up to 120 days cumulative), substitution and supervision pay provisions, longevity steps, and a multi-level grievance and arbitration process in accordance with the Public Employment Labor Relations Act (P.E.L.R.A.).
