Storm damage and VDOT updates: eight roads closed, longer repairs expected for washouts

VDOT’s quarterly presentation included a storm update: Carrie Sheppard, Charlottesville residency administrator, told the Board eight Albemarle roads are closed because of the recent storm. Five closures are washouts (614 Sugar Hollow Road expected to reopen the evening of Oct. 2; Craig’s Store Road 635, Broad Axe 682, Bearwood 811 and Whippoorwill 839 require contractor work and could take more than two weeks) and three roads are closed for flooding (622 Albavanna Springs Road, 689 Birches Creek, and 712 Plank Road). Sheppard said some repairs will require contractors and that timing depends on availability and weather.
Fire Chief Dan Eggleston described the county’s multi‑wave response, including evacuations at Misty Mountain Campground and several rescues; he praised the National Weather Service and Rivanna Water & Sewer for providing real‑time data. “One of our challenges is that our county is so big…we rely on a handful of gauges to let us know about the streams,” Eggleston said, and he urged pursuing additional gauges and partnerships to improve situational awareness. Board members asked about maintenance priorities, the truck restriction signage and repair scheduling; VDOT said it will follow up with detailed answers and is coordinating maintenance and contract schedules.
