Makanda board hears broadband update as BEAD funding attempt falls short

The Village of Makanda Board of Trustees heard an update on efforts to expand high‑speed internet in the valley during its Oct. 7 meeting. President Tina Shingleton said she had followed up with Kevin Wiggins of WK&T and was told the company had been unsuccessful in securing federal BEAD funds; she said the village will continue to look for other assistance options.
During the public comment period, resident Kim Baker thanked the board for local improvements and reported she has Starlink service at the Bell Building. Trustee Cardenaz said he had heard favorable reports about Starlink as an option for connectivity in portions of the valley. No formal action or funding was approved at the meeting on broadband; Shingleton said she will keep reaching out to potential partners and report back to the board.
The board did not set a follow‑up date for a broadband decision at the Oct. 7 meeting.
