Board hears Behavioral Interventions Committee: no disparities found for students with IEPs

Corey Cawthon, chair of the Behavioral Interventions Committee, summarized the committee’s review of behavior-intervention data at the Nov. 14 meeting. The committee’s analysis concluded there are no disparities in discipline between students with individualized education programs (IEPs) and students without IEPs. The minutes state: "The committee reviewed the data for behavior interventions as it relates to our kids with IEP’s to ensure no disparities exist between them and our kids without IEP’s. They do not."
Cawthon said committee members emphasized shifting from punitive discipline to positive behavior supports, focusing on underlying deficits, building relationships, and offering professional development for teachers. The committee plans to continue meeting with representation from each school and next meets Jan. 22, 2025 at 4:00 PM to monitor data and implementation.
