The Carbondale Elementary School District No. 95 Board of Education voted Nov. 14 to approve a tentative resolution to file a 2024 tax levy that is less than 5% of the prior year’s tax extension. Board member Stacye Saunders moved the resolution, and Aimee Wigfall seconded; the roll call vote was unanimous among members present (Field, Saunders, Greer, Roper, Wigfall, Cawthon) with McHenry absent.
Janiece Blake, the district’s chief school business official, told the board that "The tentative levy must be available for 30 days and must have a public hearing before it’s adopted similar to the district’s budget." The board scheduled the required public hearing for Dec. 19, 2024 at 7:00 PM as part of the December meeting agenda; the final levy will be acted on after the notice period and hearing.
The board’s action on Nov. 14 set the maximum levy to be filed but did not finalize the levy rate or extension amount. The motion’s written description in the minutes noted the filing would be "less than 5% of the prior year’s tax extension." The vote was recorded as a roll call with six yes votes and no opposing or abstaining votes.
