Resident asks Oviedo Council to pause or review use of Flock license-plate cameras

At the start of the Aug. 3 meeting’s public-comment period, Oviedo resident Gabby Mengele urged the council to suspend or reconsider the city’s use of Flock license-plate reader cameras and to hold a public workshop on the program.
Mengele said Flock was presented to council as a public-safety tool but questioned whether it makes the public safer in all cases. "By installing these cameras all over our community without our consent, you are now having a citywide geofence search running at all times, regardless of whether a crime has been committed or not," she said, and asked the council to adopt public policies limiting historical searches, interagency sharing, custom hot lists, data retention and AI searches, require documented case numbers and supervisory approval, and publish regular independent audits. Councilmembers acknowledged the request and discussed making existing access-and-use policies more transparent and potentially reviewing them at a future meeting.
