Special education director reports health blitz, Lions Club grant and community-schools planning

Brooke Kensler, Director of Special Education, told the board that the district's health services are focused on immunization compliance and vision/hearing screenings. She said the district is doing a "health blitz" for fifth graders using a mobile unit every other Thursday through the end of the school year to improve compliance and avoid exclusions in October.
Kensler also said the district nurse is pursuing certification to become a CPR instructor and "will be able to train staff next school year." The district received a $1,000 grant from the Lions Club to purchase a SPOT vision screener intended to improve screening for students who cannot respond to conventional screeners. Kensler outlined ongoing Community Schools planning, including school councils at Parrish and CMS that are assembling recommendations for school resource centers and upcoming family engagement at Children's Day at the Park.
