Board directs staff to pursue gym refinish, playground redesign and modular classrooms

Janiece Blake, the district's Chief School Business Official, summarized Building & Transportation Committee findings and said the committee recommended pursuing a complete refinish of the Carbondale Middle School gym floor rather than a screening process. "The best course of action at this point is to move forward with a refinish of the gym floor," Blake said.
Blake also described a planned renovation at Thomas School: the district met with architect Gail White to identify worn and salvageable elements, will schedule an engineering survey to address drainage and infill loss from rain, and aims to complete playground work before the start of the next school year. The committee is also requesting quotes to purchase new modular classrooms for Lewis and to replace the Thomas modular. A custodial survey returned building-satisfaction ratings (restrooms 3.67, classrooms 3.82, common areas 4.05, cafeteria 4.14, overall 3.80). Blake said the district will solicit vendor quotes and return with cost estimates at the next committee meeting.
The board did not vote on contracts at the March 27 meeting but directed staff to obtain quotes and engineering input to inform future procurement and bidding.
