The policy update adds references to personal devices (smartwatches, earbuds/AirPods) and invites site-specific procedural implementation to be finalized over the winter break for fall 2025 rollout.
During debate, one board member voiced concern that a single, district-wide policy might not serve all students equitably and that some families rely on phones for safety and communication during the day. "Parents have the right to keep that connection throughout the day with their young children so that they know that their child is safe and supported in school," the director said during discussion and then voted no. Other board members emphasized the committee process and said procedures will be shared with stakeholders; proponents said the policy differentiates by level and allows for communication outside class time. The policy passed on second reading by a 5–1 vote.
Board members directed staff to continue stakeholder engagement on procedures and to provide the community with clear implementation guidance before district-wide rollout.
