Council approves first reading to rezone land to support BJWSA wastewater plan

Council advanced a map amendment to rezone a 37.8-acre parcel from Rural Preservation to Resource Conservation to support planned wastewater treatment capacity for BJWSA.
Hunter Smiley (planning staff) described the parcel and said the planning commission recommended approval; BJWSA representatives Michael Lisonbee and Taylor Logan told council they had coordinated with DES and received preliminary waste-load allocations. "We've already coordinated with DES. They've given us preliminary waste load allocation," said Michael Lisonbee, BJWSA deputy general manager for engineering operations.
Council members toured a comparable Beaufort wastewater plant and discussed buffer zones and the professional operations of BJWSA; the first reading passed. BJWSA said the rezoning is necessary to pursue site-permit planning and to align with its long-term regional utility plans.
