Carbondale schools to hire in-house custodians; Director of Maintenance to receive $10,000 raise
Summary
The Carbondale Elementary School District approved posting for in-house custodial positions and a $10,000 salary increase for Director of Maintenance Brad Isom after administrators said moving custodial services in-house could yield roughly $100,000 in initial savings, though benefits may reduce net savings.

Carbondale Elementary School District No. 95 voted Oct. 24 to post job openings for custodial staff and to raise the salary of Director of Maintenance Brad Isom by $10,000 to reflect added supervisory duties.
Chief School Business Official Janiece Blake told the board the district extended a one-year contract with HES earlier this year to allow time to plan a transition. "The hope is that once these positions are posted, we will begin to vet applicants, and hire them over the next two months," Blake said. She added that the district can terminate the current HES services with at least 30 days' notice per the agreement and that termination would not require additional board action.
Blake presented a cost analysis showing "initial savings of close to $100k" from moving custodial services in-house but cautioned that social security and IMRF benefits are paid from Fund 50 and that employee health insurance would reduce those savings. She also described a plan for Isom to implement districtwide cleaning standards using a 5S system to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
The board voted unanimously to approve the custodial posting and the $10,000 salary increase for Isom. The motion to post custodial positions was made by Markida Roper and seconded by Aimee Wigfall; the salary increase motion was moved by Renada Greer and seconded by Stacye Saunders. Administrators said the goal is to have new employees in place to start in January.
