District unveils draft policy to let students participate in overlapping curricular and extracurricular events

Superintendent Robert Fitzpatrick presented a draft procedure aimed at allowing students to participate in overlapping curricular and extracurricular events without penalty. The draft asks coaches, directors and principals to coordinate scheduling so students are not penalized when conflicts arise.
"What you have in front of you, are the draft of dual participation expectations... students should be able to participate in curricular or extracurricular activities, even if they conflict, periodically with time," Fitzpatrick said. He said he will gather input from principals and then take the draft to the policy committee to be developed into policy.
Trustees noted the draft appears more inclusive than the prior guidance and asked that principals be consulted before formal policy changes are proposed.
