The Cascade School District Board voted Jan. 12 to add boys volleyball as an OSAA-sponsored sport at Cascade High School following a three-year club history.
Principal William Rasmussen told trustees the club averaged 12–15 players in recent years and that the board should approve one varsity team to start. "It's gonna be roughly 10,000," Rasmussen said when asked about first-year costs, and he said the team historically self-funded much of its operations while a club.
Board members discussed potential impacts on other spring sports; Rasmussen acknowledged the risk of "cannibalizing" athletes from track or baseball but said some students have played multiple sports in the past. The resolution to add boys volleyball passed by voice vote.
District staff said they will cap the roster at one varsity team initially and seek creative funding (equipment borrowing, fundraisers) to reduce district budget pressure for the first year.
