During the public hearing on the proposed FY25-26 tentative budget, two residents asked questions about the capital program and tax notices. Mark Platz of Eagle Lake asked about last year’s budget and the five-year capital plan; Kristia Johnson confirmed the CIP total was about $1.9 billion over five years and explained that roughly $793.1 million is included in the FY25-26 proposed budget and that project timing affects year-to-year front-loading.
Daniel Wolf of Winter Haven asked whether the majority of residential property owners would see a tax increase. County staff and commissioners clarified that the county did not raise its millage for unincorporated Polk County and that school-millage questions were under the school board's authority. Staff advised that the hearing is for public comment rather than a back-and-forth Q&A on individual tax-trim notices.
Both residents received answers or referrals; the board closed public comment and proceeded with votes on tentative millage rates and the tentative budget.
