The Academy of Performing Arts (APA) presented its charter application to the Cherokee County School District board, saying more than 30 local leaders and organizations have endorsed the proposal and that the school has established partnerships with WCCQ radio, Gaffney Little Theater, the Musical Instrument Foundation and the Kids Club of Cherokee County.
APA representatives said they submitted a comprehensive five-year budget that prioritizes classroom instruction and charter-specific accounting support from VeriCPA. A presenter listed additional named contributors, saying, “Melissa Yazzie and Janao Noel with VeriCPA ensure sound financial guidance and Charter specific accounting compliance.”
Board members thanked the applicants for their work and said the district completed a rubric-based review. The board framed the Q&A as an opportunity for clarifying details about curriculum alignment, student supports and financial impacts. The presentation team emphasized that Core Knowledge will be the academic framework with an integrated-arts component and highlighted plans for professional development through the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.
The session included public testimony and a prolonged question-and-answer period during which board members probed admissions rules, transportation plans and who would be responsible for day‑one implementation. No board vote on the charter occurred during this portion of the meeting; the board adjourned the session after the Q&A.
