District outlines three-tier middle-school math pathways to increase rigor and flexibility

District math leaders presented a restructuring of middle-school math intended to increase both rigor and student access.
Director Byron Bethards, K12 Math TOSA Jennifer Vomicil, Cheldelin Middle School teacher Jared Callis and Middle School Coordinator Kim Johnson described three proposed pathways: Standard (Algebra I readiness by 9th grade), Enhanced (multiple entry points to complete Algebra I in 8th grade) and Accelerated (requires a 6th-grade proficiency assessment for Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade). Presenters also described new intervention classes launched this year at the middle school level to target foundational skill gaps such as fractions and operations.
Board members asked about implementation, placement criteria and implications for equity; presenters said future planning (noted as 2024–25 planning in the packet) will focus on high-school pathways and expanding access to advanced courses such as Calculus BC.
