SHAC presents annual report; seeks more parent and student involvement

The district's School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) presented its annual report to the board, summarizing activities, leadership changes and plans for community outreach.
Brooke Merritt explained SHAC's state requirement under Texas Education Code §28.004 and described the council's role in aligning health education and wellness curriculum with local community values. Merritt announced that Dr. Shawn Walker will be the district SHAC contact moving forward and said Jeanne Dunlap will serve as incoming chair; she also recognized former student secretary Lily Medlin for three years of service.
Jeanne Dunlap and student representatives outlined recruitment goals, including targeting parents and students through campus events and a back-to-school outreach strategy. "If you have any relation to schools, students, teachers, administrators, you care about the district ... SHAC is an amazing place to go," one presenter said, urging community participation.
Trustees thanked SHAC leaders and staff for their work, noting the council's role in connecting health, wellness and student success. The board received the report as an information item and discussed outreach plans and member recruitment.
