Second-graders' mail program highlighted as long-running literacy activity

Sabrina Kent presented the SES Post Office educational spotlight at the March 11 Santiam Canyon School Board meeting, describing a two-week program in which early-grade students learn letter writing and addressing skills.
Kent traced the activity to its origins around 1982 at Gates Elementary, crediting second-grade teachers Melody Munger and Cathy Griswold for creating the program and keeping it alive through successive second-grade teachers. "The program was created to support early writing skills," Munger said while describing the program's goals.
Kent said the activity has expanded over time to include high school and preschool students, and students may continue writing letters to take home and have them stamped as part of the experience. The board and attendees applauded student volunteers who help deliver the mail and thanked program founders for their long-term contribution to student writing practice.
