A staff member summarized the policy choice: "The policy says families may be charged any assessment fees," and added, "We didn't change the language in the policy since it said 'may' and not 'will.'" Staff explained the child study team will consider each application packet holistically rather than using weighted sections, and recommended changing the preschool teacher checklist wording from "never" to "rarely." Board members asked whether the April 15 deadline considered the mobility of the district's population; staff said moving the process to the school level would allow timely Braken assessments, child study reviews and family meetings so families receive placement decisions sooner rather than waiting through the summer.
Staff stated the process will no longer be run from the district office and instead will be handled at the school level to expedite assessments and communication.
