At its March 9 work session the Port Orford‑Langlois School Board heard a staff presentation on recent student assessment and attendance data and discussed next steps to support students.
Teacher Donna Johannesmeyer presented results from the DIBELS and I‑Ready testing programs and noted a full PowerPoint is available online. Principal Lisa Wendel distributed Driftwood School attendance information using SWIS data and said, "Attendance is not as good as it could be." Wendel told the board she has been calling parents and sending letters and said April is typically tough as students become restless; she added that having a school counselor "has been extremely helpful." Superintendent Aaron Miller said follow‑up information will be included in future board reports.
Principal DeAnna Williams summarized district on‑track figures: "All PHS students are 100% on track 14/14. All Family Academy students are 68% on track 4/6. In total POLSD is 90%, 18/20." She noted district goals aim for 90% or better attendance per class. Board member Bob Brown asked why the district's figures appear low compared with state results; Miller replied there is "a big difference between daily assessments and state assessments," and staff discussed causes such as test anxiety and core language skills. DeAnna Williams and Lisa Wendel suggested practice sessions and more explicit academic‑vocabulary instruction to familiarize students with test language and reduce anxiety; Judy Miles emphasized increasing student comfort with academic vocabulary.
The meeting concluded with a procedural motion. Angel Ashdown moved and Judy Miles seconded to adjourn; Korinn Hockett, Judy Miles, Carol Hachert, Angel Ashdown and Bob Brown voted in favor. Korinn Hockett adjourned the meeting at 6:27 p.m.
