Smyrna adopts Bee City USA resolution to boost pollinator habitat

A representative of Keep Smyrna Beautiful told the Smyrna mayor and council that the Bee City USA program aims to "galvanize communities to sustain pollinators" and said pollinators support almost 90% of the world's flowering plant species and about 500 native bee species in Georgia.
The presenter outlined commitments the city would adopt if it joins Bee City USA: host one educational event annually, install and maintain Bee City signage, publish a Bee City web page, expand pollinator-friendly habitat on public and private land, adopt an integrated pest management plan to reduce pesticide use, and incorporate policy language into the city's comprehensive plan. Councilmember Oglesby moved approval and councilmember Gould seconded; the council voted 6-0 to adopt the resolution.
Council members thanked Keep Smyrna Beautiful for its work and noted the designation will support local environmental awareness and community engagement.
