Committee backs call for bids on Rubicon Wells backup tower to add chlorination, generator

The Sunnyside-Tahoe City Sewer and Water Committee agreed by consent to call for bids on a backup tower project for Rubicon Wells No. 2 and No. 3, a package that will add permanent chlorination facilities and onsite backup power to improve system consistency.
Staff recommended adoption of Resolution 24-25, telling the committee that the project “will construct a backup tower building, including a permanent backup generator and chlorine injection system for our wells 2 and 3.” The project is in permit review and design; staff said they plan to put the work out to bid in October with an anticipated award in November and construction beginning in May 2025. “The current engineer's estimate is 1,400,000, and we have received 200,000 in grant funding,” staff added.
A committee member asked whether the chlorine injection would be episodic or continuous; agency operations staff explained that Rubicon currently chlorinates full time only at Well 1 and that Wells 2 and 3 lack buildings or permanent chlorination points. Adding chlorination at Wells 2 and 3 and a backup generator, the staff said, will allow all three wells to be chlorinated at the same level and reduce seasonal fluctuation in chlorine residuals. The committee indicated consent to move the resolution forward.
