Union member urges action on staff safety; board asks for incident data

Megan, speaking for OSEA members, told the board that staff safety has become a bargaining priority and described multiple recent incidents affecting morale and classroom functioning. "Since the last school board meeting, there have been more than 7 instances in just this building of a staff person being targeted, and some of those have resulted in injuries," she said, adding that some staff hesitate to report incidents because of concerns about consequences for students or for themselves.
Board members acknowledged the testimony and asked administration to produce logged incident trend lines and metrics so the board can determine whether the problem is growing and what targeted actions might reduce incidents. Superintendent Penrod and staff said they have investigated prior allegations and will remind staff about reporting processes; the board asked staff to present data at the next meeting and to continue dialog with classified staff and OSEA representatives.
No formal disciplinary or bargaining actions were decided at the meeting; trustees framed next steps as requesting data and convening collaborative discussions to produce possible safety and training solutions.
