Brookings-Harbor School District 17C's Budget Committee met for an orientation and training session on April 15, 2026. Chair Jay Trost called the work session to order at 5:03 p.m.; the meeting was held at Kalmiopsis Elementary School and a meeting video link was posted publicly.
District leadership and fiscal staff reviewed the basics of the district budget as a one-year financial plan and described how "good faith estimates" are used to project revenues and expenditures during development. Present at the meeting were Chair Jay Trost; Budget Committee members Trish Walker, Alan Nidiffer, Janece Payne, Katherine Johnson, Dona Dotson, Nathan Hanscam, Kelsey Bozeman and Sonya Billington; Superintendent Helena Chirinian; Director of Fiscal Services Dede Corpening; and Administrative Assistant Nancy Raskauskas-Coons. One member, DeAnne Varitek, was absent.
The session covered how the budget is organized, the role of the budget committee, and the public processes that follow. Committee members were told they should review the proposed budget and budget message, ask clarifying questions, receive public comment and ultimately approve the budget and establish the tax rate; staff clarified that the committee does not set staffing levels, salaries, or adopt policy. The training closed with confirmation of two follow-up Budget Committee meetings on May 26 and June 2, both at 5:30 p.m. The chair adjourned the meeting at 5:21 p.m.
