Assessor Justin Mason told the board that a reported discrepancy in the village grand list should have been recorded as taxable rather than exempt, shifting a utility value and producing an estimated $80,518 tax bill on the 2026 grand list. "This errors admissions brings a value difference, going from exempt 2,773,900 to being taxable, which results in an approximately $80,518 tax bill on the 2026 grand lisonbee tax year," he said and explained the reporting and appeal options.
Mason said the board can approve the change tonight, allow the village to appeal or abate, or table the item for further review. Board members expressed concern about precedent and the potential budget impacts on the small village, and a motion to table the item to the next meeting so village staff could review the underlying documentation passed. The assessor said he would coordinate with district and state advisers if the board ultimately declined to approve the E&O.
