Seaside board briefed on attendance push and local option levy renewal funding teaching positions
Summary
District leaders said a local option levy renewal (current rate 52¢ per $1,000 assessed value) will appear on the May 19 ballot as a renewal that does not raise taxes; officials said levy funds currently support about 14 teaching positions and emphasized an attendance campaign this September.

Presenters told the board the district is participating in a statewide attendance campaign and highlighted related outreach and supports for students and families. The presenter said the district is emphasizing physical and emotional health, belonging and academic engagement as part of a push to improve attendance this year.
The presenter also reminded the board that the district's local option levy — historically used to fund staffing rather than capital projects — expires at the end of June and must be renewed on the ballot. "The local option levy funds approximately 14 teaching positions," the presenter said, and the renewal will be placed on the May 19 ballot next year as a renewal that "does not increase" the current levy rate. The presenter stated the district's current levy rate is 52¢ per $1,000 of assessed value and said staff will prepare materials to answer common community questions about taxes.
Board members discussed last-election turnout and outreach challenges during COVID-era campaigning; the presenter said the last renewal passed by a substantial margin during virtual outreach. The board asked the administration to provide materials and to coordinate community outreach so voters understand the levy will renew existing funding for classroom staff rather than add a new tax burden.
