Point Roberts Food Bank seeks conditional-use permit for storage building at 6 Tower Road
Summary
Jane Donaldson, treasurer of the Point Roberts Food Bank, told the advisory committee the food bank's conditional-use permit was accepted and described plans for a heated 24x48-foot post-frame storage building; site constraints include R-2 zoning, a wetland delineation and no septic, and the group will follow standard building-permit checklist items if the CUP proceeds.

Jane Donaldson, the treasurer for the Point Roberts Food Bank, told the Plant River Community Advisory Committee that the food bank's conditional-use permit application for a storage building at 6 Tower Road was accepted on July 25.
"For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jane Donaldson, and I am here as the treasurer of the $20," Donaldson said, and described the proposal as a storage/warehouse for nonperishable food while perishables would continue to be stored at marketplace vendor freezers. She explained the site is zoned R-2 and therefore requires a CUP for a warehouse use.
Donaldson said the food bank purchased the lot and plans to install a post-frame kit building with a roll-up door, a personnel door, and space for freezers and shelving. She told the committee there is a wetland on the parcel that will require a wetland survey and potentially mitigation, and that the site lacks septic so it will not be used for direct food distribution from the site. "We'll do that," she said about making the driveway changes needed for fire access so fire trucks will not have to back in.
Chris, who described experience with the selected manufacturer, said the company (M and W Building Supplies of Canby, Oregon) produces attractive post-frame buildings and that the food bank's structure will be about 24 by 48 feet with the roll-up door roughly 12 feet wide by 10 feet tall. He added the project team will shore up a culvert to support fire-truck access.
Committee members asked about setbacks, landscaping and utilities; Donaldson said landscaping and final budget decisions will follow the wetland delineation and full permitting process. The committee will receive the customary building-permit checklist (lighting, landscaping and other compliance items) once the CUP process finishes and a building permit is applied for.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the CUP during the meeting; members asked staff and proponents to submit the full conditional-use paperwork and to update the committee as permitting progresses.
