Board hears budget concerns as ending fund balance falls and fire-suppression repairs loom

The Port Orford-Langlois board reviewed financial materials March 16 showing the district's ending fund balance declined from more than $1 million in January to a lower level by the time of the meeting. Board member Carol Hacherl asked for more detail on how changes occur in the Estimated Ending Fund Balance; Superintendent Aaron Miller explained the gap between estimated costs and actuals and identified the fire suppression system as a major factor.
Transportation and maintenance staff also reported the DWS reader board is difficult to repair and exposed to the elements; board members expressed concern about expense. "In January the ending fund balance was over $1M but now is lower," Carol Hacherl said. Bob Brown suggested the district consider a financial-tracking tool he saw at the OSBA conference; Miller asked Brown to identify the tool for possible implementation.
No specific dollar amounts for repairs or reader-board replacement were provided during the meeting; the board directed administration to investigate options and return with estimates so the items can be reflected in the 2026–27 budget discussions.
