The Port Orford-Langlois School Board voted unanimously March 16 to adopt a four-day school week pilot for the 2026–27 school year, with district leaders saying the change will preserve instructional minutes while creating space for staff development.
Superintendent Aaron Miller told the board the Calendar Committee and community input informed the proposal and that "students will reach the required number of instruction hours" by adding an extra 15 minutes to each day. Board members debated logistics including classified-staff hours, Friday childcare for enrolled students, and whether the district would provide meals on Fridays.
Judy Miles noted community opinion is split about 50/50, and Bob Brown urged the board to treat the change as an experiment and review attendance and cost data after one year. Korinn Hockett moved to approve the calendar pending a final proofreading by district staff; the motion passed after Brown changed an initial abstention to a yes vote.
School officials said additional implementation details, including classified-staff schedules and student supports for Fridays, will be worked out before the new calendar takes effect.
