At the Aug. 3 meeting the commission reviewed an initial proposal for a roughly 4,700-square-foot addition to a church at 201 South Main.
Planner Severson told the commission the addition would be two stories at the rear of the existing church, add about 4,700 square feet, include additional parking, a covered drop-off, and modified traffic circulation. He said the city's sidewalk policy requires a sidewalk on the Railroad Street frontage and that the city's traffic consultant reviewed circulation options.
Commissioners raised concerns about emergency access and the proposed one-way drive. Commissioner Wood and others urged eliminating the one-way circulation and relying on Railroad Street for circulation; commissioners also recommended further engineering submissions and fire-department review before site-plan approval. Several commissioners expressed support for preserving the building's existing architecture and noted the church's contributions to downtown activity.
Staff requested feedback to allow the applicant to refine plans prior to formal site-plan submittal. The commission did not vote on the project at the meeting; it offered guidance and requested additional technical reviews.
