Cascade SD 5 reports enrollment gain as board examines budget uncertainty

Superintendent Darin Drill told the Cascade SD 5 Board of Education on Nov. 10 that district enrollment is up by roughly 55–60 students this year, with reported average class sizes of 25.2 (A), 23.4 (T) and 23.3 (C).
Drill said administrators are tracking proposed reductions at the federal level and are awaiting the state economic forecast expected next week. "We will know more next week when the economic forecast is published," he said, and emphasized that leadership is reviewing core values and options to manage any shortfall.
Board members pressed staff about contingency options if the state reduces funding. Chair Brett Stegall asked about the condition of other districts and what steps they might take; Finance Director Mr. Wang told the board some districts are already considering measures such as reducing school days or furloughing staff.
The board did not take formal budget actions at the meeting but asked staff to continue scenario planning and to report back once the economic forecast is available.
